A dress is read by its condition, its colour and whether it fits. A clean, well-fitting dress is the settled good reading: honour, a state that suits the one in it, and something that covers as it should. A torn or soiled dress turns the reading toward a standing damaged or a matter that has become exposed — and the interpreters read the tear's place, since what is torn from behind is not read as what is torn in front. A dress that is too large or too small is a position that does not match the person holding it, in either direction. New clothing given to the dreamer is read as a state newly entered, which is where the reading of marriage for an unmarried person comes from — not from the dress itself but from the change of state it marks. Green or white are the best of the colours in the older readings; black is read by context and is not bad in itself. Losing a dress or being left without one is read as a loss of covering: a protection, a reputation, or a role.
The basis is in the language and in the Qur'an rather than in fashion. Arabic uses clothing for state and character directly — a person is said to be clothed in dignity or in disgrace — and the Qur'an calls the garment of God-consciousness the best garment (al-A'raf 7:26) in the same passage where it speaks of clothing given to cover. Spouses are described to one another as garments (al-Baqara 2:187). Clothing in this vocabulary is what you are seen as and what keeps you covered.
For an unmarried person this dream carries hope, so it is worth saying plainly: a dream of a dress is not an engagement, not a confirmation about anyone, and not a timetable. It is not a ruling. Wanting something is by itself enough to produce the dream. If it left you troubled instead of glad, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and leave it untold.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
