Giving zakat is read by the giving rather than by the amount. Paying it willingly and in full is the settled good reading: an obligation discharged, wealth made clean, a matter that was owed and is now not. Being unable to pay points to a constriction the dreamer feels rather than to a debt recorded against him. Giving in secret was read as the better of the two throughout, following the plain preference the Qur'an states for concealed giving (al-Baqara 2:271). Receiving zakat rather than giving it shifts the dream toward a need being met, and the interpreters read it without any shame attached — the categories entitled to it are named in the Qur'an, and being among them is a circumstance, not a fault. Calculating it and finding it more than expected was read as an increase already present but not yet noticed.
Zakat is not charity in the loose sense, and the reading rests on that. The word's root means to purify and to grow, both at once, and the obligation is a due on wealth rather than a gift from it. So a dream of paying it reads as something being cleaned and something being released, and a dream of withholding reads as a holding-on that costs the holder.
A dream of zakat is not an audit. It does not tell you whether what you paid was accepted or whether your calculation was right — for that there is the arithmetic, and there are people who know it. It is not a ruling and carries no obligation of its own. If the dream troubled you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
