Dreaming of Zebra in Islam

The reading follows the animal's strangeness rather than any danger in it. A zebra seen calmly, at a distance is read as an unusual matter entering the dreamer's affairs: something that does not fit the categories he already has. A zebra among ordinary horses or donkeys is the sharpest form, read as a person or an arrangement that resembles what is familiar but does not behave like it. Trying to ride or harness a zebra is read as attempting to put something to a use it was not made for, and the older interpreters treated this as a caution about the attempt, not about the animal. A zebra taking fright and running is read as a matter that cannot be held still long enough to be settled. A herd of them is read as circumstances that are difficult to tell apart from one another. Being unsure whether what you saw was a horse or a zebra is read as a judgement the dreamer has not yet been able to make.

In Arabic the animal is called the wild donkey, and the wild ass has a fixed place in the language as the creature that cannot be broken to work and bolts at the first alarm. That image is used in the Qur'an: al-Muddaththir 74:50 likens those who turn away from the reminder to startled wild donkeys fleeing from a lion. So the dream reading rests on a known association, unmanageability and sudden flight, and the striped coat only adds the sense of something mixed and hard to place.

This dream does not describe anyone's character, and it must not be used to decide that a particular person is unreliable. It is not a warning, not a ruling, and not a basis for withdrawing from anybody. A zoo visit, a documentary, or a child's picture book will produce it with no meaning at all. If a dream unsettles you, the guidance is the same as for any: seek refuge in Allah from its harm, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.
