Dreaming of Zamzam in Islam

Zamzam is read by how it is taken and by whom. Drinking it clear and to satisfaction is the plainest of the good readings: relief, a need answered, an intention that finds its way. Drinking a little and remaining thirsty has been read as a matter begun but not carried through, rather than as a refusal. Giving it to others to drink is read as benefit passing through the dreamer to people around him — several of the older readings hold this to be better than drinking it alone. Carrying it home is read as bringing a good back to one's household. Seeing it but not reaching it points to something standing between the dreamer and what he intends, and the interpreters treated that as an invitation to look at the obstacle. Washing with it was read as a clearing away — of a worry, of something one wants to be rid of. Water that appears fouled or withheld is read as a hesitation in the dreamer's own resolve, not as a judgement passed on him.

Zamzam is not a symbol built out of resemblance; it is a real well beside the Kaaba, drawn from since the time of Hajar and Isma'il, and the whole tradition treats it as blessed and as water drunk with an intention. That habit — that one drinks it for something — is what the dream readings rest on. What the dreamer is reaching for in the dream carries more weight here than the water itself.

A dream of drinking Zamzam is not a cure, not a confirmation that a supplication has been answered, and not a ruling. Illness is treated by treatment, and a dream neither diagnoses nor discharges it. Nor is the dream a summons to travel. The tradition places most of what is seen in sleep with the sleeper's own day, and longing for the Haram produces this dream in anyone who has been thinking of it. Should any dream leave you uneasy, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.
