Dreaming of Zoo in Islam

A zoo is read by whether the animals are contained and where the dreamer stands. Walking through a zoo and watching safely is read as being among people of very different tempers and managing to see them clearly without being drawn in — discernment, in short. An animal loose among the visitors is read as a nature that has escaped its restraints, whether that of another person or the dreamer's own. Being inside a cage while people look in is read as exposure and being judged by those who do not know your circumstances. Feeding the animals is read as maintaining relationships that require handling. A zoo where the animals are neglected or starving is read as responsibility held and not discharged. Recognising a particular animal you fear shifts the reading onto whatever that creature means to you, since the older interpretations always read a beast by its own known character rather than by the enclosure it sits in.

The interpreters had menageries but no zoo as we know it, so nothing is claimed from the old books directly. What carries the reading is the plain arrangement: many different natures gathered in one place, each behind a boundary, all watched. The tradition already reads individual animals as temperaments — the lion for force, the fox for cunning, the sheep for meekness — and a zoo simply puts them side by side, which is why it reads as mixed company and the judgement needed in it.

This does not identify anyone in your life as any animal, and it carries no ruling. A visit with children, a documentary, or a crowded and difficult week will each produce it. Do not use it to think badly of a person. If it frightened you, do as was taught: seek refuge in Allah from its harm, turn onto your other side, and let the dream go untold.
