Dreaming of Water in Islam

Water is read first by its clarity, then by its motion. Clear water is the settled reading: life, provision, knowledge, and relief after difficulty. Murky or bitter water reverses it toward trouble or something taken from a doubtful source. Still water is a condition that holds; flowing water is a matter in motion. Drinking water is receiving what it stands for; giving it to others is providing it. Flooding water carries its own weight — an overwhelming affair rather than a benefit, and the imagery of the flood in the Qur'anic accounts stands behind that reading.

No symbol in the tradition is more settled than water, and it is not a matter of dream-lore: the Qur'an makes water the origin of every living thing (al-Anbiya 21:30), and rain in the Qur'an is the standing image of mercy arriving after drought. The symbol is drawn from the text and from a desert life in which water was, without metaphor, provision itself.

A dream of clear water is not a promise, and a dream of a flood is not a warning of one. The tradition treats the true dream as one part among several kinds, most of what a sleeper sees being the mind's own leavings. If the dream troubled you, seek refuge in Allah, turn to your other side, and leave it untold.

Murky or bitter water reverses the settled good reading that clear water carries, turning it toward trouble, or toward something taken from a doubtful source. Still murky water is a condition that is holding; murky water that is flowing is a matter already in motion. This is not a warning of anything specific happening to you — the tradition treats a true dream as one kind among several, and most of what a sleeper sees is the mind's own leavings.
