About this dream

Wind in a dream — what does it mean in Islam?

Wind is read by its strength and by what it does to what it touches. A light wind, cool and steady is the favourable form, read as ease arriving and as circumstances turning helpful without effort from the dreamer. A wind carrying scent, dust of rain, or the sound of something is read as news on the way rather than as the thing itself. A violent storm, wind that flattens is the hard form, and the older interpreters read it as a trial affecting many rather than one, since wind falls on a whole district and not on a house. Wind that lifts the dreamer off his feet turns the reading toward circumstances stronger than his footing. A wind that takes something from your hand is read as a loss the dreamer did not cause. Wind without any air moving on the skin, seen only in the trees is read as knowing of a change without yet feeling it. A dead calm where wind is expected is read as a matter suspended.

Wind: where does this meaning come from?

The Qur'an holds both readings in place. Winds are sent as bearers of glad tidings before mercy, in al-Araf 7:57 and al-Rum 30:46, where they raise the clouds and the rain follows. Against that, a furious wind is what came upon Ad, described in al-Haqqa 69:6. The older commentators noticed that the plural, winds, tends to appear with mercy and the singular with punishment, and the dream books follow that instinct closely: many gentle winds are good, one great wind is not.

Wind in a dream — is it a bad sign?

No dream of wind or storm forecasts a disaster, an illness, or an upheaval in your family. It is not a warning and not a ruling, and no decision should rest on it. Weather in the night, an anxious week, or news of a storm elsewhere will each produce it. If it frightened you, the guidance is to seek refuge in Allah from its harm, turn onto your other side, and to tell no one.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
