Dreaming of White (color) in Islam

White is read by what carries it. Wearing clean white clothes is the standard favourable form, read as a state that can be seen without embarrassment. White clothes that are stained turn the reading toward a good standing marked by something small, and the older interpreters were careful that the smallness is the point: white shows what other colours hide. A white house, or a room full of white light is read as ease and clarity in one's circumstances. White hair on a young person is read as dignity and gravity arriving early rather than as ageing. A white animal is read more favourably than the same animal in another colour, since the colour softens the reading of the creature. Everything white, with no other colour anywhere was treated cautiously and read as a matter emptied of detail rather than as purity. Whitewashing something is read as covering rather than cleaning.

The Qur'anic basis is direct and has two sides. Faces whitening and darkening on the Day of Judgement is the image in Al Imran 3:106 and 3:107, where white belongs to those in the mercy of Allah, so the colour carries vindication rather than mere cleanliness. But the same root turns in Yusuf 12:84, where Ya'qub's eyes turn white from grief. The interpreters knew both, which is why white is read as clarity in a state, and can mean either that the state is good or that everything else has drained out of it.

This dream is not a certificate of anyone's purity, not a sign that you are forgiven, and not a judgement on anybody else. Colour in dreams is not evidence, and no ruling follows from it. Bright bedding, a hospital, a wedding, or a recent funeral shroud will each colour a dream white on their own. If any dream leaves you distressed, seek refuge in Allah from its harm, turn onto your other side, and do not speak of it.
