Dreaming of Wedding in Islam

A wedding is read by its sound and its order more than by the couple. A wedding that is calm, with people gathered and food served is the settled favourable form: joy that is shared, an affair concluded openly, a matter that has the agreement of those it concerns. A wedding with wailing, drums or uproar was read with caution by the older interpreters, who treated excessive noise at a gathering as closer to mourning than to celebration — the same crowd, the same house, a different sound. Attending a wedding without knowing whose it is is read as being drawn into other people's arrangements. A wedding that no one comes to points to a matter concluded without the support the dreamer expected for it. A wedding interrupted or called off is read as an agreement that will not hold in its present form. Preparing a wedding — cooking, inviting, setting a house in order turns the reading onto the work itself: an undertaking whose weight falls on the dreamer.

The wedding is not read as a private event but as a public one, because that is what it is in the tradition: marriage is meant to be announced and fed, and the walima gathers people precisely so that the thing is known. That is why the older readings look first at whether the gathering was orderly, well provisioned and welcoming, and treat that as the whole reading. They also connected loud lamentation at a wedding to the sound of a funeral, and read the reversal in either direction with care.

No dream of a wedding announces a marriage, names a partner, or says anything about a real couple. It is neither a promise nor a warning. Someone planning a wedding, invited to one, or asked constantly when they will marry will dream of it for that reason alone. If the dream left you uneasy rather than glad, seek refuge in Allah from what disturbed you, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.
